Catholic completed the 2021 season with a 13-1 record. The Knights cruised through the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record going into the post season. Last year Catholic captured the region four title and a number one seed in the Class 3A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. Catholic made a nice playoff run in 2021, reaching the semi-finals before falling to a very good Montgomery Academy team by the score of 10-7. No team at Catholic ever won more games in a season than the thirteen victories last year. The 636 points scored by the Knights last year were a team record in a single season. The high-scoring Catholic Montgomery offense ranked 5th in the AHSAA. They averaged 45.4 points a game. The Knights defense dominated most opponents as they ranked 2nd in the AHSAA. The defense gave up just 3.1 points a game. Over the past two seasons the Knights have gone 25-4 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Catholic has gone a combined 80-56. Their 58.8% winning percentage ranks 19th in Class 4A over the past twelve seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Catholic has managed to compile a record of 130-138. Their 48.0% winning percentage ranks 32nd in Class 4A and 205th in the AHSAA. The Knights are led by head coach Kirk Johnson who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 13-1 record in his first season at Catholic. The Knights saw improvement from a 12-3 record the season before coach Johnson arrived. Under his direction the Knights have qualified for the playoffs once. They have won one region crown with Coach Johnson. Coach Johnson's overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 13-1 (92.9%). The Knights return enough key players in 2022 to be considered a state championship contender in 2022. Caleb McCreary returns at quarterback along with running back Jeremiah Cobb. The Catholic Knights will play in Class 4A region two during the 2022 season. The Knights move up in classification to Class 4A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move. The Knights have one of the toughest schedules in Class 4A. Their opponents had a combined record of 70-47 last season. That ranks 7th in Class 4A and 30th in the AHSAA. The Knights enter the 2022 season riding a 14 game regular season winning streak. Catholic has won 17 consecutive region games. The Knights enter the season with expectations of not only a region title but reaching the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region two and should be a team in the thick of the hunt to represent the South in the Class 4A Super Seven come December. The Knights have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 2015 and this year should be no exception. The Knights open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent McGill-Toolen on Friday, August 19 at Catholic Field. Last year the McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets finished with an overall record of 7-5 and in third place in Class 6A region one. The Yellow Jackets lost in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs to Hueytown by a score of 49-17. Catholic and McGill-Toolen have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Knights have a 2-0-0 record against the Yellow Jackets. They last met in with Catholic returns 3A All-State Junior quarterback Caleb McCreary. He was named to the second team last season. The Knights also return Senior punter Gabe Russo. He was named to the second team. The Knights also return Senior running back Jeremiah Cobb.
